May 2003 CLUB NEWSLETTER

On April 5th members gathered in Guthrie at Pioneer RV Park for breakfast and a quick meeting. Thanks for the muffins and rolls, Gary.

The meeting started around 11am with approximately 22 in attendance and one guest. While master chef Bob Supplee cooked the hamburgers and hot dogs for lunch, we started with introductions from around the room. The first order of business was deciding what to do Saturday and Sunday. The weatherman called for rain overnight so it was decided that Saturday would be the best day to try Gary Taber’s land. Ken

Butler was able to arrange access to the river through a fellow 4 wheeler (a Jeep owner - they’re not all bad!) and the river was planned for Sunday. In exchange for their generosity the Jeepers joined us for our outing on Gary’s land.

Brian Branch was unable to make the meeting but has stepped up to make

arrangements for the trip to Grand Lake (Disney, Oklahoma) with the Heartland International and Bi-State Binder clubs. The outing has been planned for May 30, 31, and June 1. To rock climb at the off-road park it’s recommended that you be equipped with at least 33” tires and lockers. The park offers more than rock climbing and everyone, stock and modified, will be able to get around. The area is fairly open, offering opportunities for watching the rock climbers if you choose.

At the annual meeting, John Alexander had offered use of land he owns for a club outing. The outing will be scheduled for some time this year. The land is between SE 59th and SE 74th. A workday will be planned to

remove some trees and debris (this was later planned for May 4th). Anyone able to help on the clean-up day should bring a chainsaw and gloves. There is an RV Park approximately 4 miles from the land. John has talked to the manager who will be able to accommodate RVs and tents.

Gary Taber and Ken Butler were presented with a clock that featured the club’s logo in the center for their efforts in planning the outing for the weekend. The meeting ended with door prizes being awarded to: Beau Biggers and Jack McClary who received t-shirts; Kenny Wiens and Fred Boggs each won a clock; Margo Wiens a Coca-Cola car; Sandy Wiens a spare headlight in its case; and, keychains were given to Jessica Williams and Martin Peterson.

Once everyone was ready, we headed out to Gary’s with approximately 11 Internationals

and 3 Jeeps. One hill presented a little bit of a challenge to some and unique body changes to others. Justin Biggers was jumped from behind by a tree that put a pretty good dent in the rear quarter panel. In the process of continuing the march to be King of the Hill, Justin’s wife got pretty excited when he went for revenge and nearly took out another tree. Everyone made it up the hill but George needed repairs to the starter after shutting it off at the top. We then found a ravine with some rocks that presented a pretty fair challenge. George had to give it up when he lowered his springs (it was later discovered that he also broke a hub) and Jack McClary never was able to try it. While waiting his turn he noticed that his u-joint was out in the short side of the front axle.

Saturday night a soaker came in and made for some fun getting to the river. On one of the country roads making our way there Kenny and Barbara Wiens just about got stuck and most of us slipped and slid a lot of the way there. On the way down to the river, just before getting on the firmer sand, Kenny & Barb did get stuck and required the assistance of a Jeep to get them out. Once we got on the river the clouds began to clear off and

it was a beautiful day for wheelin’. Everyone headed back to camp and went separate ways shortly after lunch.

Thanks again to Gary and Ken. Hope to see some of you at future outings, you missed a good time!
